Custom profiles in salesforce are the bread and butter of object-level security for any org.
Profiles are where you open up access from the org-wide default security to groups of users.
In practice, you often see this opening up access to each department like the sales department or the service department.
Please use permission sets to open up additional access beyond this!
Youtube Video
One thing to note before we get too far into the blog post.
We have a video on profiles on the Salesforce Emily youtube channel!
Sometimes it is easier to watch someone perform a task rather than to try and follow along with a blog post.
Step by Step Profiles
The first thing you will need to do is get to the setup of salesforce.
Go to the top right corner of salesforce and click the gear icon.
From that drop down click on the setup.
From here you will need to go to the quick find and type in profiles.
Then click profiles.
Then you will either need to click new profile or clone a current profile.
Cloning a current profile is a lot easier rather than creating a new profile.
This way you already know the current state of those settings and you can add or subtract settings from that cloned profile.
If you clone it go into the profile to be cloned then on the top buttons click clone.
Then you will need to enter in the new profile name and click save.
Then you will need to set up all of the profile settings.
Some of the most important parts will be the custom app settings,
the tab settings who who can see which tabs,
Administrative permissions, and of course the cred permissions for the objects.
When done click save and assign it to the user.
To get to the user go back to the quick find and type users then click on it.
Then go to the user you wish to assign to this new profile.
Click edit, and change the profile to the correct one.
Click save and you have created your very own custom profile!
