Creating a custom object in salesforce is fairly simple and straightforward.
However, it can be a little tricky to get to the places, where you need to get.
First, let’s talk about what an object actually is and if you need an object or you can make one do.
So an object is simply a grouping of records with similar data.
For example, a common object you’ll see is the opportunity object. The records in this object are all considered deals in the pipeline.
Another example is the lead object. All of the records in this object are considered leads or someone who has some interest in your product or service.
You do not need an object for every small detail, however, you could use one for keeping track of projects or for tracking recruitment.
Youtube Video
One quick thing that I want to mention before getting too far into the post, is that I have we have a video on this topic on the Salesforce Emily youtube channel!
It is pretty succinct on how to get where you need to in order to create a new object.
However I know it’s not always the best time or place to watch a video, so keep scrolling to get to the full walkthrough!
Step-By-Step:
After you’ve done your due diligence and know you need to create a new custom object. Go to the top right corner of your salesforce instance.
From here click set up.
This will take you to the back end of Salesforce where most administration takes place.
Then click object manager. This takes you to the list of objects in your current instance.
Then in the top right corner click create.
Then click custom object. This will take you to enter the metadata.
The metadata is the information about the object or whatever you are making.
So this means the labels, descriptions, etc.
Enter in the appropriate info anything with a red vertical bar is required.
Keep scrolling and you’ll see some more information is needed.
This helps with record type names.
A few more pieces of information are needed.
Such as deployment status needing to be either in development or deployed.
As well as allowing the records in the new object to be searchable.
After that click save!
You will need to go back in and create a tab so the object is usable to your users.
But that is a quick and simple way to create a custom object in Salesforce!
