Inline Editing in Salesforce with List Views

inline editing in salesforce

Inline editing can be really tricky especially because there isn’t much documentation on why things are not working.

Spoiler alert: it is probably because you have multiple record types on your list view. Narrow it down to one and you should be good to edit.

If you’d like to figure out how to fix this with a setting and/or a new/edited list view keep reading!

Youtube Video

One more thing to note before we get too far into this blog post.

We have a youtube video on inline editing on the salesforce emily youtube channel.

Sometimes it is a bit easier to watch someone perform a task rather than to follow along with a blog post.

Step by Step

Now that we have the introduction out of the way lets jump into this tutorial.

The first thing you will need to do is validate that you can not edit by lines on the wanted list view.

You are probably on this post because you have validated that already. Great!

Go the the setup by clicking the gear icon in the top right and click setup.

In the quick find on the left side of your screen type in ‘themes and branding’ and click or double click.

This will take you to some UI settings.

In the top 10 or so settings you should be able to see that ‘enable inline editing’ setting.

Make sure it is checked and save.

If this does not work then you are dealing with multiple record-type issues.

To resolve this you will need to edit your current list view to only have one record type or create a new one.

I will show you how to create a new one. Go to the list view you are trying to edit.

Click on the gear icon under the new button. This is a different gear icon than we have previously clicked on.

Then a popup menu will show from this gear icon and click new underneath the gear.

new list view

This will bring up a new list view popup make a name and the list api name should auto populate.

Choose who can see the list view and click save.

Then go to the funnel icon underneath the printable view button.

Click add filter and use the record type field, operator equals, then choose the record type (just one record type).

Click done then save.

save new list view

This will refresh the list view you have created.

As you can see in the below screenshot, inline editing is now available!

You can also change the fields that are available on the list view.

If you’ve saved this as only you can see this list view then feel free to play around with the settings since it is a personal setting you’ve created!

Conclusion

A big congrats to you for making it through this tutorial! We hope you found it useful!
