Benefits of Using Opportunity Teams

Opportunity teams are one the of the best tools salesforce has released for its enterprise customers. Opportunity teams allow you to have more than one person work on and provide value to an opportunity.

The Basics of Opportunity Teams

While these teams do have some limitations it can be awesome to manually add people to opportunity teams when you need a little extra help or your sales process needs more than one sales person to close the deal.

For example, if you are a consulting firm it might take one sales person to contact, another to outline what we can provide for them, and another person to create a statement of work for the customer. That’s three people to close one deal.

These opportunities will include the opportunity owner. When you add another person to the team, it will add them as their role in salesforce not their role on the opportunity.

Opportunity teams only available on enterprise and unlimited editions. So, if you’re on the professional edition, you may want to consider upgrading so you can get this feature.

Upgrading with Code!

Opportunity teams are great, but there are somethings that you’d want to have happen automatically. Especially if you are an enterprise-level system.

If you have a standardized system of who should be on an opportunity team you can create some APEX to have the teams automatically added or removed. This is one of my biggest complaints that isn’t a feature for salesforce opportunity teams.

Another feature that would need to be added via code (or released as standard for salesforce *cough* *cough*) is having an optional new role for the opportunity team.

Let’s go back to the consulting firm example. Your role at the organization could be Business Analyst and that would be your role outlined in the salesforce system. However, on an opportunity you could take the role as a solutions architect and create the statement of work.

You would show up as a business analyst on the opportunity. Instead of a solutions architect. You can add this with code later on.
