How to Create a Geolocation Field

The geolocation field in salesforce is an extremely unique field. It uses longitude and latitude to display a location anywhere in the world.

In practice, I have seen this used most often in a shipping and handling scenario to show where a fulfillment center or shipping center is located.

So it will be fairly obvious when you will need to use this field versus another field.

Youtube Video

One thing before we get too far into this tutorial. I wanted to mention that we have youtube video on how to create this field on the salesforce emily youtube channel!

Sometimes it is easier to watch someone perform a task rather than to try and follow along with a tutorial.

Step By Step

The first thing you will need to do is get to the setup portion of salesforce.

To do this click on the gear icon in the top right corner of salesforce and click setup.

From there you will need to go to the object manager.

Once there you will need to click on the object that you wish to create this new geolocation field for.

Then click on the fields and relationships tab.

This will take you to a full list of the fields on the selected object.

From there select new to create the new geolocation field.

You will need to select the geolocation field type and click next.

From there you will need to enter in some information called metadata. This will mostly be the naming conventions.

However, with this field type you will also need to enter in how the latitude and longitude will be displayed.

When completed click next.

Then you will need to select the field level security to allow or disallow certain users to edit and see this field.

Click next and select which page layouts you would like this new field to be on.

Click save and you have created your very own geolocation field!

Conclusion

A big congrats to you for making it through this tutorial! We hope you found it useful!
