How to Create an Auto Number Field in Salesforce

create auto number field

The Auto Number Field is a really useful field when you are dealing with a unique set of records.

This allows you to set up an automatic numbering system to help keep your automation or order on track.

In practice, this field is extremely useful when using some type of shipping or ordering system within salesforce.

For example, you could use this to set up a tracking number to be sent out to the customer when their order is fulfilled.

Youtube Video

One thing I would like to note before moving on, we have a youtube video on how to create this field.

Sometimes it is easier to watch someone perform a task rather than to try and follow a long with a blog post.

Step By Step

First, we will want to get to the object manager.

Click the gear icon in the top right and click setup.

set up

This takes you to the backend of salesforce. Go to the object manager.

From there select the object that you wish to create a new field for.

From the object, select fields and relationships.

This takes you to the list of current fields that are on the object you selected.

Click new to create a new field.

From there you need to select the data type. Click auto number, then next.

From there you will need to enter in the field metadata.

This is made up of mostly the naming conventions.

However, with the auto number it is important to choose the display format and the starting number.

This allows salesforce to get you off on the right footing when this field is fully set up.

Click next. This will take you to set up the field-level security. Field level security works with the profile to create a personalized security clearance for each field.

Click next. This will take you to select which page layouts have this new field.

Click save and you have created your very own auto number field!

Conclusion

A big congrats to you for making it through this tutorial! We hope you found it useful!
