The text field in salesforce is the bread and butter of fields. It allows you to write just about whatever information you would like!
Although one drawback of the text field is the difficulty to report on what is written in those fields.
However, if you just need a place for your employees to write down unstandardized information then this is the field for you!
Many of the fields you know and love are text fields. Any name field and the next steps field are text fields.
Youtube Video
One thing to note before we move on to the tutorial. We have a youtube video on this very topic!
I will leave a link to it.
Sometimes it is a bit easier to watch someone do the action than to follow along with a blog post.
Step by Step
First, you will need to go to set up in the top right corner by click on the gear icon.
While in the setup go to the object manager in the navigation menu.
From the object manager, select the object that you wish to create the new text field on.
I selected a custom object called new object.
From the object select fields & relationships.
This will bring up a list of current fields you have on the selected object.
From there select the new button.
This will bring you to a page to select the field type.
Select text, then next!
From there you will be required to enter in the metadata.
Any field with a red bar next to it is required.
When completed select next.
Now you will be required to set up the field level security.
This allows us to break down the security based on the different profiles in your salesforce org.
Click next.
Then choose any and all page layouts you would like this new field to be apart of.
Click save and you have created your very own text field!
Conclusion
A big congrats to you for making it through this tutorial! We hope you found it useful!
